A reminder that every set of records that has an index may not be completely indexed. The ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) materials at Ancestry.com are not completely indexed. Some congregational records only index certain entries and may only index certain elements of those entries–names of sponsors in baptismal records are an excellent example. There are other materials in this collection that are not indexed at all.
Our post on Rootdig about the records of the West Point, Illinois, church provides a specific example. The post on Rootdig about the Lutheran almanacs mentions a record that is on the site but not indexed at all and includes names of pastors, churches, publications, etc.
Always determine what’s indexed and what is not. Sometimes browsing manually is still necessary.
