For years microfiche indexes to deaths in the State of New York have only been available in a few select locations, at select days, and select times. That has changed due to a New York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request from Reclaim the Records that allowed them to obtain copies of the indexes and put those indexes online. As of this writing the indexes for the years shown (1880-1942) have currently been put online. Keep in mind that these are not databases-the index must be browsed. This is a work in progress. Not all years have been posted.
Some years are hard to read. Early years contain scant data. New York City births are generally not included. Yonkers, Albany, and Buffalo are not included until 1914 or 1915.
For some years you can browse the images page by page online. For others the entire file (rather large) must be completely downloaded as a zip file, extracted, and viewed. A big thanks to the staff of Reclaim the Records for making the requests and putting these indexes online.

Thanks for posting these links to the NYS Death Index. However, I’ve noticed that the 1893 link takes you to the 1883 index instead.
Thanks for letting me know. I’ll fix it.
THANK YOU. SO GLAD TO HAVE ACCESS TO THE RECORDS. LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING OTHER YEARS AVAILABLE BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER HE LISTED DATES.

This is great news! Thanks!
Hello. My great uncle George Washington STODDARD died in a Watertown hospital November 19, 1952. He was born in Leeds Grenville County, Ontario, Canada and had his family here. Not sure what he did in NY. Thanks for your help.
Wonderful news! THANK YOU!
Is 1945 online?
Can someone tell me what the number next to the person’s name means? Will it lead me to the record?
My aunt, Cora Loomis, has her death place listed as M23620 in the NY Death Index 1852 – 1956. Could you tell me what that means?
